SERDANG - The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic did not hamper the collaborative relationships between the Institute for Mathematical Research (INSPEM), UPM, and Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in continuing the planned activities under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

One of the activities under the MoU between the two institutions is the graduate student exchange programme.

For the record, since 2017, INSPEM had been sending INSPEM graduate students to several mobility programmes abroad, such as in Italy, Germany and China.

The programme is an excellent platform for students to gain exposure and experience in studying and conducting research abroad. The experience gained is bound to be a driving source of success in their respective studies, and it creates opportunities for networking and research collaborations in the future for the students and INSPEM.

This year, three INSPEM doctoral students, Kathiresan Gopal, Choong Pak Shen and Nur Hazirah Hussin, participated in the mobility programme (outbound) to the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, starting from March 6 to July 24, 2022.

The supervisors of these students at INSPEM are Prof. Dr. Lee Lai Soon, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hishamuddin Zainuddin and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nik Mohd Asri Nik Long.

The programme was funded by the Erasmus+ grant.

The students shared their excitement about participating in the programme and believed that through the programme, they could learn more about the culture of foreign countries aside from the specialised knowledge they seek.

They also shared similar views that the mobility programme would bring a unique learning experience for international students, with immense exposure to the cultural, economic, political, educational and ecological aspects.

The students' exposure to the new environment allowed the expansion of their social interaction skills globally and enriched their learning experiences. Such benefits would provide the students with various new value-added skills to their existing knowledge along with the skills as members of the global community who play a role in the international arena.

It is hoped that students who undergo mobility programmes will be a catalyst to contribute sustainable scientific research that will benefit the religion, race and the country. - UPM
